THE FORD TOPLOADER FOUR SPEED TRANSMISSION The Ford Toploader Transmission was introduced in 1964 to replace the Borg Warner T-10. This is the super-tough transmission built by Ford Engineers to stand up to just about anything demanded from it. A Toploader transmission is a manually shifted three and four speed gearbox introduced in 1963 by the Ford Motor Company to replace the BorgWarner T-10. It was used in most Fords and Mercurys from 1964 until 1973 as well as some foreign models. Officially designated the 3.03 three speed or Ford design four speed. The 3.03 is the centerline. Decoding the Toploader

For most 60's and 70's Toploaders the ID starts with either prefix HEH or RUG

Transmission serial number

The lower number on the tag is the transmission serial number. The transmission serial number is a production serial number and should not be confounded with the engine serial number, they are not the same. Some transmissions have a date code instead of the serial number.

Input Shaft

2 different INPUT shaft are commonly available for all V8 Ford's, 1 1/16' and 1 3/8'. But both input shafts have the same number of splines of 10.

Bolt patterns (bellhousing)

2 different bolt patterns. Early Toploaders used a narrow bolt pattern type for attaching the transmission to the bellhousing and the later versions used a wider butterfly type bolt pattern.

A year later a transmission shop was established to rebuild toploaders. Soon afterwards, the DWT parts department was organized. When toploader parts were discontinued at Ford and toploaders parts became scarce, a decision was made at DWT to manufacture their own parts.

DWT has now been involved in toploader remanufacturing and the toploader parts business for over 50 years. Dan and the DWT company has devoted a lifetime to the incredible Ford toploader transmission.(All the wonderful things you heard about the Ford toploader and Ford 9’’ rears are true.) Our company always strives to build the best toploader transmissions and manufacture the highest quality parts possible.
